CHR: COR0796: Christening not located. In COR0777, Jeannette Merritt wrote regarding the Thomas Rowe who married Margaret Bayley that "there are too many [Thomas Rowe] on the IGI to work out which one is his christening." In COR0807, Jeannette elaborated: "I have been unable to find a baptism of the Thomas Rowe who married Margaret Bayley. I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to solve this problem, but got nowhere. So I agree that all we can do is to assume that he is the son of Edward Rowe and Margery Elles because of the Overseers accounts. The parish baptisms, marriages and burial records for the 1600's are very sketchy, with a lot of years missing, so it is very difficult to go down the right path. But we know that the Overseers accounts show that Thomas stopped paying rates in 1754 so he must be the Thomas who died then."
MAR: CHT0126. Previously, there was spectulation that Margaret Bayley may have married the Thomas Rowe who was christened in 1689 in Redruth; that theory has now been discounted (see discussion in COR0777, COR0796 and COR0798).
In COR0777, Jeannette Merritt wrote: "All the children christened at Camborne from 1710 to 1729 were recorded as the children of Thomas - no wife is mentioned. Looking at these baptisms some of them are very close together .... There was also another marriage at Redruth between Thomas Rowe and Ursula Brands in 1715, but I could not find any baptisms at Redruth from this marriage." Looking at the christenings of children of Thomas Rowe at Camborne, Jeannette speculated that "some of them could have been the children of Thomas and Mary Webster [subsequently disproven] or Thomas and Ursula Brands. They were mostly male, but none of them were called Digory! There were two Edwards and three Richards, but I could not find any burials for the earlier ones, which points to the fact that they were not siblings."NOT: In COR0796, Jeannette Merritt reported on her considerable research to confirm the correct parentage of Thomas Rowe (now RIN 11678) who married Margaret Bayley in 1709 at Camborne, the presumed father of Philip Rowe (RIN 10476): "I have used the typescript of the notes you [Walter Meyer zu Erpen] made in August/Sept 1978 of the Overseers of the Poor accounts for Camborne from 1648-1717 and Churchwardens' Accounts for Camborne from 1677-1780, together with rough notes from the same volumes which Lesley Morton sent me in 1993. I also spent a day at the County Record Office hoping to look at the volume following 1780 - but it does not exist! I also looked at the Bishops Transcripts for Camborne to check the baptisms of the children of Thomas and Margaret Rowe to see if the mother was named, with the following results. Edward Row Chr. 3 Sep 1710 son of Thomas; 1712 was missing so could not check Richard; Edward Roues chr. 30 Jan 1714/15 son of Thomas; but there was no Philip Rowe chr - I checked this thoroughly for other years as well but he was not there. 1717 was missing so could not check Richard Rowe, Margaret Roue chr. 8 Feb 1718/19 dau of Thomas; Anthony Row chr 21 July 1723 son of Thomas; Richard Row chr. 25 Mar 1727 son of Thomas; William Row chr. 28 Sep 1729 son of Thomas. I omitted to check James Rowe as he was on another sheet of paper which I had mistakenly left at home. But none of these entries showed the mother's name so I could not prove they were all the same family. When a further child Anne Rowe was chr. at Gwithian on 17 Sep 1732 the register showed that she was the dau. of Thomas and Margaret. Of course there were often omissions in the Bishops Transcripts, and Philip Rowe's chr. was definitely in the register.
As regards the Overseers accounts Pencomb/Pencobbin is situated at Godrevy right on the edge of Camborne parish and next to Gwithian. Rates were paid as follows: 1649 to 1692 John Rowe (1677 marked "snr"). (John Rowe was buried at Camborne on 24 Dec 1693, there was no Will). 1695 Edward Rowe. 1696, 1697 and 1700 Edward Rowe and Charles Hockin, (Edward Rowe was buried at Camborne 21 June 1702, there was no Will. He married Margery Elles at Camborne PC on 15 Sep 1679). 1708 and 1714 Charles Hockin and widow Rowe. (Margery Rowe was bur. at Camborne either on 20 Jun 1716 or 13 Nov 1719). 1722 Thomas Rowe and Thomas Ellis. 1739 to 1748 Thomas Rowe. 1749 Thomas Rowe and Thomas Ellis. (Thomas Rowe was buried at Camborne on 30 Apr 1754 . Administration of his estate was granted to his son Edward Rowe of Crowan). 1758 Thomas Rowe's executors. 1759 Thomas Ellis. 1760 John Rowe plus Thomas Rowe. So this seems to point to the fact that the Thomas Rowe who died in 1754 was the son of Edward Rowe who was the son of John Rowe! I have not found a Thomas Rowe the son of Edward, nor an Edward Rowe the son of John! Edward Rowe and Margery Elles had four children chr. at Camborne - Mary Row on 1 Nov 1684, John Row on 12 Oct 1688, Ann Row on 8 Oct 1692 and Margery Row on 12 Nov 1695 (born 11 Oct 1695). The Thomas Rowe who died in 1754 had a son called Thomas but I have not found a son called John. I hope this all makes sense to you, it is all rather complicated."OCC: CHT0126 indicates that Thomas was a Labourer, based upon the 1754 Administration of his Estate document (COR0777).
DTH: COR0250, enclosure 4 (Chart I): Jeannette Merritt's pencil annotation, on the copy mailed to Walter Meyer zu Erpen, indicates that there is no Will for Thomas Rowe. COR0798: Administration of his estate was granted to his son Edward Rowe, a labourer of Crowan, on 20 May 1754. Thomas Rowe was a labourer of Camborne.
BUR: CHT0126. COR0796 corrected the linkage of this 1754 burial to Thomas Rowe, son of Edward Rowe and Margery Elles.
BIR: COR0250, enclosure 4, Chart I. In COR0737, Jeannette Merritt clarified that the birth year of 1685 is based upon the annotation, "mother in the 52nd year of her age," when Margaret's last son James Rowe was christened on 21 August 1737.
MAR: CHT0126. Previously, there was spectulation that Margaret Bayley may have married the Thomas Rowe who was christened in 1689 in Redruth; that theory has now been discounted (see discussion in COR0777, COR0796 and COR0798).
