Family of Thomas Rowe (ca. 1680s-1754) and Margaret Bayley (ca. 1685-1752) of Camborne, Cornwall, England

Notes

20. Philip Rowe

CHR:  CHT0126.  COR0805:  IGI reports son of Edward Row and Thomasin.

MAR:  CHT0126.

Ann Webster

MAR:  CHT0126.

39. Philip Rowe

CHR:  CHT0126.

DTH:  This child must have died before 6 July 1792 if the Philip Rowe born on that date is in fact his brother.

BUR:  COR0777 and COR0799.

40. Jenifer Rowe

CHR:  CHT0126.

DTH:  This child must have died before 30 January 1798 if the Jenifer Rowe born on that date is in fact her sister.

BUR:  COR0777, COR0799 and COR0800.  Burial entry shows "infant".

42. Jenifer Rowe

CHR:  CHT0126.

21. Philip Rowe

CHR:  PUB0001 and CHT0126 (Mrs. J.C. Merritt).  The Philip Rowe, son of Philip and Ann, privately baptized on 17 April 1739, was publicly baptized on 6 May 1739.  Parish Church confirmed in COR0777 and COR0799.

NOT:  Summary of Jeannette Merritt's argument from COR0250, enclosure 4:  "There is no proof that the Philip Rowe who married Mary Osborne was baptised at Camborne Parish Church, but if he was, there were three Philip Rowe baptisms which took place at that church which have to be considered when trying to establish which one married Mary Osborne:
6 May 1739   Philip Rowe, son of Philip and Ann (privately baptized 17 April 1739)
4 September 1742  Philip Rowe, son of Phillip and Elizabeth (privately baptized)
1 March 1746/47  Phillip Rowe, son of Phillip"

Jeannette eliminates the 1742 Philip, concluding that he died and was buried at Camborne within days of his baptizm:  7 September 1742  Phillip Rowe, son of Phillip.  Regarding the 1747 Philip, she concludes that he is best matched to a Philip Rowe, aged 87, who was buried in Sithney Parish Churchyard on 22 May 1834. That Philip Rowe, husbandman, married Elizabeth Rowe on 17 April 1781 in Camborne Parish Church.  The family must have moved to Sithney between 1803 when the last child was baptized at Camborne and 1807 when the eldest daughter was married at Sithney.  Fortunately, this Philip Rowe left a Will, dated 10 May 1834, that mentions his wife Elizabeth and all of his children.  His daughters are referenced by their married names.  Importantly, he mentions grandchildren too, in particular "my grandsons Thomas and Philip Rowe, sons of my son Philip Rowe."  Jeannette concludes:  "the fact that the Philip Rowe who died at Sithney in 1834, aged 87, had a son Philip Rowe, whose two sons were called Thomas and Philip Rowe, rules out any connection with our family, as there was no Thomas Rowe listed in the Rowe family bible [BIB0002], as children of Philip and Mary Rowe."

MAR:  PUB0001.

DTH:  COR0250, enclosure 4 (Chart I):  Jeannette Merritt's pencil annotation indicates that there is no Will.

BUR:  COR0250, enclosure 4 (Chart I):  Jeannette Merritt's pencil annotation indicates that he was not buried in Camborne.

Mary Osborne

CHR:  PUB0001.

MAR:  PUB0001.

43. Margery Rowe

CHR:  PUB0001.

44. Philip Rowe

CHR:  PUB0001.  Listed as Philip Rowe, son of Philip and Mary.

BUR:  PUB0001.  Listed as Philip Rowe, son of Philip and Mary.  Alternately, this Philip may correspond to the following burial (also from the printed edition):  26 May 1784  Philip Rowe, son of Philip and Mary.

45. Mary Rowe

CHR:  PUB0001.  Listed as Mary Rowe, daughter of Philip and Mary.

47. John Rowe

CHR:  PUB0001.  Listed as John Rowe, son of Philip and Mary.

BUR:  PUB0001.  COR0799:  Burial record states "son of Philip and Mary Rowe, father a pauper."

30. James Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

MAR:  CHT0130.  COR0764 indicates that James is listed as a husbandman; the couple was married by licence.  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart E, indicates that the witnesses were John Williams and Sampson Swaine.  COR0764 corrected witness surname William to Williams.

BUR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart E, questions whether James Rowe might have been buried in 1817 at Camborne, aged 52, a resident of Pengigan Moor (spelling confirmed in COR0764).  COR0769 suggests that this burial is correctly linked based upon the September 1819 christening of a great-niece whose family was living at "Pengegon Moor."

Grace Rawlings

MAR:  CHT0130.  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart E, indicates that the witnesses were John Williams and Sampson Swaine.  COR0764 and COR0818 corrected witness surname William to Williams.

BUR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart E, questions whether Grace might have been buried in 1828 at Camborne, aged 60, and includes reference to "below the town".

48. Philippa Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart D, provides husband's name.  COR0764 provides date and place.  John Hocking is listed as a miner.  Witnesses:  James Rowe and Mary Richards.

John Hocking

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart D, provides husband's name.

50. Grace Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart D, provides husband's name.  COR0764.  Listed as John Williams, miner, and Grace Rowe.  Witnesses:  Thomas Harris and John Gribbell.

John Williams

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart D, provides husband's name.  COR0764.  Listed as John Williams, miner, and Grace Rowe.  Witnesses:  Thomas Harris and John Gribbell.

53. Anne Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

55. Elizabeth Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

31. John Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A, indicates that there are two John Rowe marriages, to Sarah Trezona (1790) and to Sarah Williams (1793), both in Camborne Parish Church.  COR0769 provides marriage dates.  In COR0887, Jeannette Merritt concluded that this John Rowe (RIN 11054) married Sarah Trezona.  COR0769:  John Rowe was a tinner.  Witnesses:  Simon Vivian and Richard Thomas.  The other John Rowe (RIN 11578) married Sarah Williams.  In COR0887, Jeannette Merritt wrote "I think that I have proved that this John Rowe married Sarah Trezona and not Sarah Williams.  Sarah Williams first married John Rowe (RIN 11578) in 1793 and after he died in 1796/7 she married Jacob Hill in 1799 and had a daughter Sarah Hill in 1799.  Sarah Trezona already had a daughter called Sarah Rowe (RIN 11182) in 1792 who was still alive in 1799, so she would not have called a later-born daughter Sarah as well.  So Sarah Hill's mother must have been Sarah Williams."

RES:  COR0887.  "Basset Leases Volume 2 Destroyed".  Copy stored at the County Record Office has the following entry:  Page 37, entry No 45/6.  26 October 1810.  Frances Lady de Dunstanville.  Tenant John Rowe, Camborne, miner, cottage lately built part of N-Entral Camborne.  Lives of John Rowe 40, Sarah his wife 41 and William their son 14.  Rent 3/-,  Heriot 10/-,  other services suit and court and mill and counterpart."  This shows where they were living in 1810 and that William was their son.  The ages of the father John and son William are understated by 2 years; they should have been aged about 42 and 16, respectively.

BUR:  COR0887.  "Of Roskear, aged 67."

Sarah Trezona

BIR: Based upon age 77 at death in 1844, Sarah Trezona would have been born about 1767, which is consistent with Sarah being one year older than her husband John at the time of the 1810 lease agreement.  In that document, the ages of the father John and son William are understated by 2 years; they should have been aged about 42 and 16, respectively, in 1810.

CHR:  COR0887.

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A, COR0769, and COR0887.  Based upon extensive research, Jeannette Merritt determined that Sarah Trezona married this John Rowe (RIN 11054).

RES:  The 1841 census shows that Sarah Rowe was living at Roskear Lane, Camborne, aged 70, Independent, born Cornwall, with Sarah Rowe, aged 15, ore dresser, born Cornwall.  The younger Sarah Rowe was a granddaughter, the daughter of William Rowe and his wife Alice Berriman.

DTH:  CER0420.  Listed as Sarah Rowe, aged 77, widow of John Rowe, miner.  Cause of death:  Disease of bladder.  Informant:  William Rowe, present at the death, of Tolcarne Street, made his mark.

BUR:  COR0887.  Of The Cross, aged 77.

56. Ann Rowe

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

CHR:  COR0769.  COR0887:  "daughter of John and Sarah."

60. Alice Rowe

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.  In COR0886, Jeannette Merritt attributes this child to the John Rowe and Sarah Williams marriage.

CHR:  COR0769, COR0771, and COR0886.  Listed as Alice Rowe, daughter of John and Sarah.

BUR:  COR0769.  COR0886.  Listed as Alice Rowe, daughter of John and Sarah, even though her father was deceased since 1796/97 and her mother had remarried.

62. David Rowe

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

CHR:  COR0769 and COR0771.  COR0887:  "son of John and Sarah."

BUR:  COR0769.  COR0887:  "son of John and Sarah."

NOT:  As William Rowe (RIN 11184) named his first child David, this points to William and David being brothers, the sons of John Rowe and Sarah Trezona.  As Sarah Williams' husband John Rowe (RIN 11054) had died at the latest in June 1797, and Sarah had remarried to Jacob Hill in January 1799, with a daughter Sarah Hill christened in October 1799, it seems improbable that David Rowe (christened September 1799) was the son of John Rowe and Sarah Williams.

35. William Rowe

CHR:  CHT0130.

MAR:  COR0764 provides marriage date and place.  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.  In notes related to chart A, Lesley Morton wrote to Jeannette Merritt that she was "not sure of William, John, Elizabeth & Hannibal, but others seem definitely ours."  William Rowe (RIN 11172; chr. 1805) has been unlinked from this family.  In COR0764, Jeannette Merritt explained that John, Elizabeth & Hannibal were children of William and Mary, but there was more than one marriage of a William to a Mary.

RES:  COR0772.  The 1841 census lists the Rowe family living at Ramsgate, Camborne::   William Rowe, aged 60, agricultural labourer, born Cornwall; Mary Rowe, aged 50, born Cornwall; Maryann Rowe, aged 30, born Cornwall; James Rowe, aged 20, agricultural labourer, born Cornwall, and Jane Rowe, aged 15, born Cornwall.
COR0772.  The 1851 census lists the Rowe family living in Vyvyans Rowe, Camborne:  William Rowe, head, aged 73, married, agricultural labourer, born Camborne; Mary Rowe, wife, aged 63, married, born Camborne; and Mary Ann Rowe, daughter aged 39, unmarried, dressmaker, born Camborne.
COR0772.  The 1861 census lists the Rowe family (much depleted) living in Gas Street, Camborne:  William Rowe, head, aged 83, widower, late agricultural labourer, born Camborne; and Mary A. Rowe, daughter, aged 50, unmarried, dressmaker, born Camborne.

BUR:  COR0772.  Register indicates "aged 85, of Tolcarne Street."

Mary Piper

CHR:  COR0772.

MAR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

BUR:  COR0772.  Register indicates "aged 69, of Gas Lane."

63. John Rowe POSSIBLE SON

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

CHR:  In COR0772, Jeannette Merritt indicated that there were three marriages of a William Rowe to a Mary at Camborne from 1795 to 1806 and it has been difficult to identify which children came from which marriage before 1813.  John Rowe may be a son of William Rowe and Mary Piper, but there is no way to confirm that.

64. Mary Ann Rowe

CHR:  COR0772.

MAR:  COR0772.  The register shows that William Harris, aged 55, widower, engine man, of Roskear Fields, son of William Harris, deceased miner, married Mary Ann Rowe, aged 50, spinster, no occupation listed, of South Terrace, the daughter of William Rowe, miner.  William Harris signed the register; Mary Ann made her mark.  The witnesses were John Marks and John Duckham.  There was a note before this marriage entry "The following two marriages took place at Tuckingmill Church owing to roof repairs at Camborne Church."  Jeannette Merritt wrote that there was no other Mary Ann Rowe christened who would be the correct age and the daughter of William, so even though Mary Ann said her father was a miner Jeannette was sure that this is the correct marriage.  Furthermore, William had been a miner when his children were baptised; and Jeannette could not find a Mary Ann Rowe in the 1871 census.

RES:  In COR0772, Jeannette Merritt reported finding Mary Ann Rowe living with her family at the time of the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses (see notes for her father William Rowe).  Jeannette did not understand why Lesley Morton did not include Mary Ann as part of this family.

William Harris

MAR:  COR0772.

65. Elizabeth Rowe POSSIBLE DAUGHTER

Elizabeth Rowe may be a daughter of William Rowe and Mary Piper, but there is no way to confirm that.

66. Hannibal Rowe POSSIBLE SON

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

CHR:  COR0772 indicates that father was a husbandman.  In COR0772, Jeannette Merritt indicated that there were three marriages of a William Rowe to a Mary at Camborne from 1795 to 1806 and it has been difficult to identify which children came from which marriage before 1813.  Hannibal Rowe may be a son of William Rowe and Mary Piper, but there is no way to confirm that.

RES:  This Hannibal Rowe is likely the Hannibal Rowe, aged 39 at the time of the 1851 census, born Camborne, who was an inkeeper at Treswithian, Camborne, Redruth, Cornwall, England, residing with his wife Mary Ann, aged 32, their newborn child Mary, aged 0, born Camborne, and two servants.

67. Philippa Rowe

BIR:  COR0250, enclosure 4, chart A.

CHR:  COR0772.  Register indicates that her father was a miner.  Jeannette Merritt indicated that this was the only Philippa Rowe christened from 1791 until at least 1828 in Camborne Parish Church.

MAR: COR0772 and COR0819.  Nicholas Cock, of full age, bachelor, miner, of Parkinbowan, son of John Cock, deceased shoemaker, married Philippa Rowe, of full age, spinster, of Parkinbowan, daughter of William Rowe, miner.  The bride and groom both made their mark.  Witnesses:  William Symons and Jane Symons.
