NOT: Most of the children of James and Jane Rowe emigrated to Australia in the early to mid-1850s; some lived in an area known as Fryers Creek (later became Fryers Town). In COR0837, Geoffrey Hall explained: "Gold was discovered in Fryers Creek in 1851. There was no town or village there at that time. A Post Office was opened in 1854 and named Fryers Creek. This was renamed as Fryers Town in 1856. It is a long time since I worked on the data you are interested in but I suspect Ken [Stewart] & Ernie [Orchard] used the later name for all records from the area while I used whatever was shown in the actual records. The earliest records for the area would have been actually at or in the area of the creek itself, rather than a town of that name since there was none."

RES: In COR0770, Jeannette Merritt wrote that John Rowe, aged 27, is listed in the 1851 census for Camborne at Centenary Street with his mother and siblings. The siblings not living with the family are James Rowe who is with his wife Lavinia at Killivose, Camborne, in the 1851 census, Philip Rowe who is probably already in Ireland, and Edward William Hitchens Rowe whom Lesley Morton said went to Ilsington, Devonshire, with his father. Jeannette could not locate James and Edward Rowe in the online version of the 1851 census. Also listed in the 1851 census return at Centenary Street with Jane Rowe are two grandchildren: Jane Rowe (born about 1846)(RIN 11095); and Albert Rowe (born about 1849)(RIN 11094). In COR0857, Jeannette Merritt responded to Walter Meyer zu Erpen's speculation as to which of the Rowe children might have parented these grandchildren; she pointed out that the second son John Rowe was listed as a bachelor at the time of his 1851 marriage at Treslothan to Jane Rowe. In 1851, the eldest son James Rowe, his wife Lavinia, and their first four children were living at Killivose. Is it possible that the son Philip Rowe fathered the children prior to his 1850 marriage in Ireland to Mary Nickolls? Or did the unmarried Jane Rowe give birth to these children when she was aged 18 and 21 years of age? That discussion continued in COR0876, where Jeannette posited that the Jane Rowe living at Killivose with her parents and the Jane Rowe living in Centenary Street with her grandmother might be one and the same girl. To address the issue of these two Rowe grandchildren for whom birth registrations have not been located, Walter decided to add a child named UNKNOWN to James and Jane Rowe's family, through whom Jane Rowe and Albert Rowe could be linked to Jane Rowe as grandchildren.
DTH: CHT0132.
BUR: COR0765: The burial register indicates that Jane Rowe was living at Cross Street, Camborne, aged 54 (age corrected by COR0818); Jeannette Merritt also noted that Jane Rowe's daughter Jane died at "The Cross" in 1850. In COR0818, Jeannette Merritt wrote: "Regarding getting her death certificate, yes it should give her husband's name as he died after her in 1863. The death of Jane in 1853 was the only Jane of the right age who was buried in Camborne Parish Churchyard between 1851 and 1861 - I could not find her on the 1861 census in Camborne. Of course it is possible that she went up to Ilsington between 1851 and 1861 to be with her husband, but I have not looked into that possibility."

Those children were subsequently detached as not proven. CHT0133 contains no reference to this marriage, and CHT0132 contains no reference to Philip Rowe's alleged second wife and family. In COR0836, Jeannette Merritt wrote that "it was Lesley Morton who put his wife in as Mary Nicholls. I looked back through my correspondence with her and will quote from her letter of 12 Dec 1990. This is the same letter which had the information about Caroline Rowe and Peter Gelme. This is how it continued: 'Actually a man in Tasmania has the Family Bible belonging to one of the 5 brothers - Philip - who was married to a Mary Nicholls from Staffordshire (they married in Ireland) but had no family. This Tasmanian man did not know why his grandmother possessed this Bible - it was handed on to him and he happened to read that I was interested in Camborne Rowes!'" In COR0836, Jeannette also reported that she had discovered the Rowe - Nickolls marriage on Ancestry.com in Ireland's Select Marriages, 1619-1898:

In COR0871, Jeannette Merritt addressed the issue of confusion around the Christian name of Mary Nickolls' father, confirming that it was Joseph Nickolls. The household members' names were James Rowe, Philip Rowe, Joseph Nickolls, and Mary Nickolls.
RES: PRELIMINARY Search of 1841 UK census: could she have been Maria Nickoll, aged 10 (approx.), born Staffordshire, daughter of Joseph Nickoll, aged about 55, and Ann Nickoll, aged about 55, both born Staffordshire. She may have had a twin brother Frederick, aged 10, as well as older siblings aged 15, 20 and 30, all born Staffordshire. If this is the correct individual and her mother's name was Elizabeth (based upon 1880 death registration), it is possible that the mother Elizabeth died between in/after 1826 and that the father had remarried before the 1841 census. This family was living at Bear Lane, Harborne, Kings Norton, Staffordshire, England. King's Norton is about 13 miles from Wednesbury.
