I remember being awoken that night by a terrific clap of thunder which I thought was a bomb exploding (it was during World War II), and I believe that this is what gave my grandmother a heart attack, but it was not mentioned at the inquest."

The beam pierced the roof of the cage and hit him heavily on the forehead - he died soon afterwards. All of the other passengers were uninjured. William Hosking had only been in South Africa for three weeks, having previously worked in the mines in Mexico.

I think it is unlikely that Jane would have had two granddaughters called Jane of exactly the same age, and I think that they are one and the same person. I have come across members of Rex [Merritt]'s family who were recorded in two places at once - it did happen!"
