South Wellington Local History

The historical sketches presented here relate to my maternal family’s connections to South Wellington, British Columbia. Prepared in late 2009, they were submitted to the South Wellington Historical Committee for its local history. With over 400 pages and 500 historic black and white photos, South Wellington: Stories from the Past spans the late 1800s to 1950s. Stories of the local coal mines, celebrations, tragedies and over 70 family stories make it interesting to all ages. The book is available for purchase ($24.95) at the Nanaimo Museum, 100 Museum Way, Nanaimo, BC V9R 5J8 Phone: 1-250-753-1821

The South Wellington Historical Committee received far more material than it could include in the final book. The editorial team, headed by Helen Tilley, did an amazing job of summarizing material to provide an overview of the main families living at South Wellington prior to the 1950s. Not all stories nor families could be included. I am presenting here the final versions of the submitted family history sketches with relevant photographs inserted.
